Protect! EXE/COM 3.1 (C) 1993 Jeremy Lilley
All Rights Reserved
First off, since 95% of the people never read the documentation
to much of a degree, I'll try to summarize the important things here so
that you can have a brief understanding of this program:
This program is back with a few bug fixes (most notably, a screen
bug that crashed many systems was fixed). You can see WHATSNEW.DOC for
the rest of the minor changes.
For those who haven't yet seen Protect! EXE/COM, it is a utility
that protects and encrypts your EXE and COM files and leaves them
executable. A security envelope makes a thorough CRC check to make sure
that nobody has tampered with the file and anti-debugging techniques are
used to make it more difficult to trace through with a debugger. To use
this utility with EXE files, a compression utility such as LZEXE (free!)
or PKLITE is required. Other programs such as Compack, Tinyprog, and
Diet work also.
For your information, the registered version is slightly different
from the unregistered version so that even if an unprotect program is made
for Protect!'s unregistered version, it will not work for the registered
version necessarily. The unregistered version is intended as an EVALUATION
VERSION ONLY and it isn't guarenteed to be 100% safe. Don't distribute
any files protected with the evaluation; not only is it illegal, but it is
not safe from any potential future unprotect programs. If you do register
Protect!, not only do you get to set your own CRC error message, but you
are much more safe against the hazards that Protect! was designed to
protect you against.
The documentation is rather short, so you may want to peek at it.
You do not need to use extensions on the filenames that you pass on to
PROTEXCM.EXE. The original is renamed to ".OLD" when it is through so
that it is preserved. A list of the new things is in WHATSNEW.DOC.
You can register with ORDER.FRM for $25 and if you are a member
of Compuserve, then you can register through the SWReg database and get
your registered version through Compuserve mail instead of "snail mail"
(the postal service). The files are less than 40k, so it should not be
a long transfer. If you register through the mail, but you would like
to get your files in your CIS mailbox, just tell me. Registered users
get support through mail, Compuserve, and Internet, a registered copy
updates, the legal ability to distribute protected files, and a good
conscience. Besides, $25 is a lot less than your program's reputation
if it gets "hacked" or modified.
Thank you for evaluating Protect! EXE/COM version 3.1!
